Making your own nest box

Most people think it is cosy to have birds in the garden.
It is especially nice if they pick your garden to make their nest. You can lure them, by putting up a nest box. You can buy them in the shop, but is a lot of fun to make one yourself for your feathered friends.
Not every bird uses the same nest box. A sparrow has different demands for a nest box than an owl. Besides that it is very important that you lure the right birds to your garden. A nest box alone is not sufficient. The birds need to find enough food in the neighbourhood.

Last but not least: here are some useful tips!

• Take care that the nest box is not put in a place where the sun can shine in the box all day long. Also take care that rain can not get inside.
• If there is not enough shelter, it is best to put the opening of the nest box to the east side.
• The birds must have the possibility to fly in the nest box easily. So take care that there are no branches in front of the opening of the nest box.
• In your own garden you can hang the nest box at eye level. In other places hang the nest box at a height of 2 to 3 metres.
• Be aware of cats. Take care that they can't reach the nest box
